38th annual "Old Fashioned" 4th of July & Veteran's BBQ at Charlton Park

A celebration to honor America’s independence will be held on Monday, July 4, 2022 at Historic Charlton Park in Hastings.  Festivities during the 38th annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July and Veteran’s Barbecue take place from 12-3 p.m.  Parking and admission are free.

 

A flag raising ceremony featuring representatives from all five military branches and a presentation by the Lawrence J. Bauer American Legion Post 45 takes place in front of the Upjohn House at noon. Field-day style games for all ages will be held on the Village Green at 1:00 p.m. including three-legged and sack races, watermelon and pie eating contests, needle in a haystack and baby crawl. 

 

Many talented bakers will showcase their skills as they vie for the honor to be named 2022 grand champion during the annual “fun time” pie auction contest. All pies are to be auctioned off to highest bidder and for the pie that raises the most money the Baker and Bidder will be awarded prizes. Proceeds from the pie auction go to the special event fund at Charlton Park.

 

Smokin 8’s Barbecue a Veteran owned business will be here serving up favorites like Brisket Sandwiches, Smoked Chicken, Pulled Pork, and Brats, cost varies on selected items. A portion of the proceeds support the local American Legion.  

 

Come early or stay late and enjoy the beach, fishing, picnic area, hiking trails or boat launch.  The Historic Village is also open for self-guided tours.  The Park is open every day from 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. www.charltonpark.org for more information.

Wayland man arrested for shooting incident

Wayland Police arrested a 24 year old Wayland man after an apparent shooting incident occurred in the 3500 Block of Windsor Woods at approximately 11:24PM on Monday June 27th.  No one was hit and there were no injuries.

 

Wayland Police, Allegan County Sheriff’s Deputies, and Gun Lake Tribal Police officers responded to the 911 call. A suspect vehicle was located and officers recovered a 9mm semi automatic pistol from the suspect and vehicle, and other evidence was located at the address on Windsor Woods.

 

The suspect’s name is being withheld pending arraignment.  Preliminarily the suspect has been charged with the shooting, and other gun violations.  It is believed there was only one shooter, and he is the one in custody.  This assault appears to have resulted from a dispute between two parties, and was not random in nature.    

 

State Police Investigate Two-Vehicle Fatal Crash

Michigan State Police (MSP) Wayland Post troopers are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Sunday June 26 around 1:00 p.m. on S. Yankee Springs Rd near Gun Lake Rd in Yankee Springs Township, Barry County.


Preliminary investigation reveals a trike style motorcycle was traveling southbound on S. Yankee Springs Rd near Gun Lake Rd. A northbound Chrysler Aspen SUV failed to yield the right-away, before making a left turn into a parking lot, and turned in front of the motorcycle resulting in the collision.


Both the driver and passenger of the motorcycle were thrown from the trike. The male driver, 59-year-old John Meyer of Caledonia, succumbed to his injuries and died on scene. The passenger, 69-year-old female and wife of the driver, was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries where she remains in intensive care.


The driver of the Chrysler SUV, described as a 26-year-old Delton man, had no obvious injuries but was checked by medical personnel as a precaution.
Helmets were worn by both occupants of the motorcycle. It is unknown if the driver of the SUV was wearing a seatbelt and if alcohol/drugs were a factor in this crash. Yankee Springs Rd was closed for several hours for crash investigation and clean up.


MSP was assisted at the scene by Michigan DNR, Barry County Sheriff’s Office, Yankee Springs Township Fire Department and Wayland Area EMS.
This crash incident remains open pending further investigation.

Saranac man killed in crash near Sunfield

On Wedneseday 6-22 at 7:40 p.m. Eaton County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a fatal crash on Grand Ledge Hwy east of M50.  A Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling eastbound and collided head on with a semi-truck traveling westbound. 

 

The driver of the Jeep, Bradly Christopher Hugmeyer, a 21-year-old male from Saranac, died at the scene of the crash.  The driver of the semi, a male from New Jersey, was not injured in the crash.  This crash is being investigated by the Eaton County Detective Bureau and Accident Investigation Team.  

 

Grand Ledge Hwy was closed for approximately 6 hours during the investigation. Eaton County was assisted by the Sunfield Twp Fire Department, Woodland Twp Fire Department, Woodland Twp Police, Castleton Maplegrove Nashville EMS, and MDOT.  

 

Two Vehicle Fatal Crash in Baltimore Township

The Barry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash Wednesday night, involving two vehicles, which occurred at the intersection of Charlton Park Rd and Lawrence Rd in Baltimore Twp.

The preliminary investigation revealed a westbound Ford F550 ran a stop sign and collided with a southbound Buick Lacrosse. The driver of the Buick was identified as an 88 year old male from Hastings. Lifesaving efforts were performed, but he was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford was identified as a 38 year old male from Galesburg. He was transported via ambulance to an area hospital for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation.

Fatal Crash near Algonquin Lake, Rutland Township

The Barry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash at Algonquin Lake in Rutland Township involving two vehicles, which occurred just before 10am Monday, June 20 on West State Road near Agaming.

 

Sgt. Richelle Spencer said the preliminary investigation revealed a northwest bound Ford Escape drove left of center and collided with a southeast bound Dodge Ram in the southeast bound lane. The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 53 year old male from Lowell, MI was transported to Butterworth Hospital for treatment. The driver of the Ford Escape, an 18 year old male from Kentwood, MI was pronounced deceased at the scene.

 

The crash remains under investigation and no additional information and/or details are available at this time. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in this crash.

 

Assisting at the scene were Mercy EMS, Hastings Fire Department, Thornapple Township Emergency Services, Aero Med transport team, Barry County Central Dispatch and Western Medicine Office of the Medical Examiner.

Barry County Cooling Center available this week

The Barry County Commission On Aging Building located at 320 W. Woodlawn in Hastings will be open to the public from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m Monday through Friday this week for relaxation in the air conditioning.  Bring  your reading material or laptop and a snack and keep cool with the COA.

Stolen Car found in Bristol Lake

The Barry County Sheriff’s Office responded to Bristol Lake in Baltimore Township where a swimmer had reported finding a vehicle upside down at the bottle of the lake, near the public access. Sergeant Ware said the Barry County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was able to locate and recover this vehicle. The vehicle returned stolen out of Charlotte Michigan. No one was found in or around the vehicle.

Money coming to Hastings

 

 

Michigan Governor Whitmer has awarded  Neighborhood Enhance Program grants to 33 local governments including Hastings.

The Enhancement Program provides funding for small-scale single family home rehabilitation activities including roofs, siding, windows, doors and accessibility improvents.

Hastings will receive $75,000.

Police Arrested Alexandra Palmer in Connection to a Hit and Run.

     UPDATE

Alexandra Palmer was arrested and jailed in connection to the hit and run accident May the 8th of this year that killed Mica LeBeau  on Delton road near grove street.

 

 

Barry Township Police are looking for Alexandra Marie Palmer, also knows as Lexy Palmer or Lexy Davis, who has been developed as a person of interest in the fatal hit and run accident on May 8, 2022 that killed 21 year old Mica LeBeau on Delton Road near Grove Street.

Anyone with information as to Palmer’s where abouts is asked to contact the Barry Township Police Department or Silent Observer.

Free Fishing, Off-Roading and State Park Entry During Michigan's 'Three Free' Weekend June 11-12

Michiganders and visitors can grab a fishing rod, ride off-road trails, and visit state parks and boating access sites, all free of charge during the ‘Three Free’ weekend on Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12. The ‘Three Free’ weekend builds on the 'Building Michigan Together' plan, which includes a $450 million investment to improve Michigan’s state and local parks and trails to enhance tourism and boost the outdoor recreation economy. 

 

The ‘Three Free’ Weekend includes:

Two car PI accident in Rutland Township

Barry County Sheriff’s Officers responded to a two vehicle serious injury crash on M-37 Hwy and Heath Rd. in Rutland Township Friday morning.

 

A black Chevy Impala was traveling west on Heath Rd, when they failed to stop at the stop sign a M-37 and crossed in front of a white Nissan Pathfinder. The pathfinder was unable to avoid the Impala, colliding with it on the passenger side.

 

The Impala was driven by a 17 year old female from Alto, and a 11 year old male from Alto was a passenger. Both the driver and passenger were airlifted to Butterworth by helicopter and are in serious condition. The driver of the Pathfinder was transported by ambulance to an area hospital. Their names have not been released.

 

Hastings Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance, AirCare, and Barry County Central Dispatch assisted the Sheriff's Office.

 

Barry County man convicted of torture & Murder Sentenced June 9th

Andrew Lafey, a Barry County man convicted of murder, torture and posession of a firearm was sentenced by Judge Michael Schipper on Thursday, June 9th to Life in prison without parole.  Andrew Lafey's convictions stem from the murder of 18 year old  Grace Brickley.

 

After a 4-day trial, Andrew Lafey of Nashville Michigan, was found guilty on Friday April 15th on all charges stemming from the February 16, 2021 torture and murder of Grace Brickley.  The Defendant waived his right to a jury trial and instead appeared before Judge Michael Schipper.  The case was tried by Barry County Prosecuor Julie Nakfoor Pratt and Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Elsworth. 

 

Pratt said the circumstances of Grace Brickley’s death were horrific.  The Defendant video taped himself stomping on and taunting Grace Brickley for close to 11 minutes.  The torture seen in the video came after Lafey shot Grace Brickley twice and inflicted multiple injuries to her face and breaking her jaw.  The video was played at trial for Judge Schipper. 

 

Cold Blooded murder sends Hastings Teen to Prison

18 year old Patrick Gilmore of Hastings will spend the rest of his life in prison for  killing 17 year old Lane Rosland in September 2021.

 A dispute over marijuana led to the killing. Gilmore shot and killed Roslund with a crossbow and buried his body in his backyard near Hastings. Police found Roslund's body in a shallow grave on Gilmore's property near M-43. 

Gilmore told the State Police he intentionally place Roslands sweatshirt and belongings near the Thornapple River to trick investigators into thinking Rosland drowned.

In sentencing Gilmore, Barry County Judge Schipper determined Gilmore was irreparble corrupt and didn't meet any non-life sentencing criteria for a juvenile offender.

Gun Lake Casino issues $7.4 Million in Biannual Revenue Payment

Gun Lake Casino’s revenue-sharing continues to make a major impact throughout the local area and the State of Michigan. The biannual payment stemming from the period of October 2021 through March 2022, amounted to over $7.4 million to three different recipient entities.

 

The State of Michigan Strategic Fund will receive over $4.1 million which will help award grants to businesses throughout the state and create jobs. 

 

Over $1.2 million of the recent payment will impact GLIMI, a non-gaming economic development organization with both tribe and state oversight. 

 

The local revenue share board will receive just over $2 million which continues to impact the surrounding communities around the Gun Lake Casino property. The seven surrounding local townships will receive a share of the local revenue along with Allegan County, Wayland Union Schools, and the Allegan Area Educational Service Agency. Since 2011, over $42 million has been donated through the local revenue share board.

 

“Over the past eleven years, these payments have done immeasurable good for communities,” said Gun Lake Tribal Chairman Bob Peters. “We look forward to continuing to be good stewards for the local community and the state of Michigan for many years to come.”

 

This payment brings Gun Lake Casino’s total payments to over $173 million since its opening in 2011.

Fatal crash in Allegan County

First responders were dispatched around 6:20pm Monday, June 6th to a personal injury crash on M-40 Highway in Allegan County's Trowbridge Township. Allegan County Deputies along with Allegan City Officers arrived on scene and found a single vehicle accident and the only occupant, the driver, had been ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.  The driver was southbound on M-40 when they lost control and crashed into a tree. 

 

UPDATE:  The deceased has been identified as Joseph Perry Underwood, 34 of Grand Junction.

 

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Allegan City Police Department, Gobles / Pine Grove Fire Department, Allegan Fire Department, Life EMS, and the Allegan County Medical Examiner’s Office.

 

Barry County Sheriff Files Lawsuit

 

Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf has filed a lawsuit against Attorney General Dana Nessel, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, the Michigan State Police, and others alleging that they've interfered in his investigation into voter fraud.

The lawsuit filed with a Detroit Law Firm states Nessel and Benson have shown inherent bias against any fraud claims or suspected criminal acts committed in relation to the investigation of rampant voter fraud that occured during the November 2020 election and manipulation of voter machines.

Lakewood Schools

 

 

Lakewood Public Schools and Hoekstra Transportation will host a bus driver recruitment event on Tuesday June 14th  from 10-am to 3-pm at Lakewood Schools.

Candidates who are hired as bus drivers will be paid an hourly rate of $20.50.

The event will include coffee and pizza for lunch.  Candidates who complete and turn in an application during the event will be entered in a drawing for a 55-inch television in addition to other prizes.

Eaton Co. fatal accident

The Eaton Co. Sheriff's Office reports a fatal accident occurred Saturday at approximately 8:36 p.m. when a vehicle with three (3) occupants was traveling southbound on Marshall Rd near Matthews Rd in Walton Township and the driver loss control.  The vehicle left the roadway and rolled.  Two (2) occupants suffered minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital.  The third occupant, a male subject, suffered serious injuries and later died at an area hospital.  The accident remains under investigation.

 

D-Day To Remember

 

Monday June 6th...It was 78 year ago on that day Allied Forces under the Command of General Dwight Eisenhower  landed on five seperate beachheads in Normandy France in 1944 to free Europe from the Grip of Nazi Germany in Operation Overlord...D-Day.

On May 7, 1945 Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allies in Reims, France ending World War Two.

SUV vs. Motorcycle Fatal Crash

On Friday around 3:42pm first responders were dispatched to a personal injury crash involving a SUV and a motorcycle on Patterson south of 136th Ave in Wayland Township.   An Allegan County Sheriff's deputy contracted with Wayland Township arrived on scene and life saving measures were immediately provided but the operator of the motorcycle died from the injuries sustained in the crash.   Evidence at the scene indicates that the southbound SUV turned eastbound in front of the northbound motorcycle.  The Allegan County Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash.  The identifications of the operators are not being released until next of kin is notified and investigation is complete.

Truck vs. Motorcycle accident in Allegan County

On Tuesday just after 2:00PM, deputies from the Allegan County Sheriffs Office responded to a personal injury crash on 10th St south of 102nd Ave in Gun Plain Township. A northbound Chevrolet Silverado had been turning into a private drive and drove into the path of a southbound Honda motorcycle. Preliminary investigation shows that the southbound motorcycle had the right of way and had no way of avoiding the collision. The motorcycle operator, a 51 year old Otsego man, is currently listed in critical condition at Bronson Hospital. The driver of the Silverado was a 26 year old Plainwell man. At this time, it does not appear that speed or alcohol were a factor, however, the crash remains under investigation.
