Fireworks & Special Events to celebrate America's Independence this holiday weekend

Gun Lake,  Barlow Lake, and Fine Lake all have fireworks shows planned this Saturday July 1st at dusk.  There are also fireworks on Saturday in Caledonia, Grand Rapids and Grand Haven.

 

In Battle Creek, fireworks are scheduled both Saturday night and again on July 4th as part of the Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Fest.

 

Other local events include:

 

Fireworks at Algonquin Lake on Monday night, July 3rd.  

 

The Middleville Lions Club will have an all-day celebration on July 4th in downtown Middleville with fireworks near the Middle School.

 

Historic Charlton Park Village and Museum hosts the annual Old Fashioned 4th of July and Veterans Barbecue on Tuesday, July 4th from 12pm to 3:00pm.  A flag raising ceremony will take place at noon with old time games on the Village Green to follow.

 

The Hastings City Band concludes its’ five concert series this season at Thornapple Plaza in Hastings on Tuesday the Fourth at 7:30pm with “A Tribute to America”.

Truck Crash Update

 

 

Shortly after 7:00 O'clock Tuesday morning a  large delivery truck making a turn at the corner of Broadway and Green street in Hastings went out of control and flipped over spilling its contents of bottled beverages.

 The accident blocked the intersection for some time as police re-routed traffic at the busy intersection until the mess was cleaned up.

No reports of ainjuries.

Power Outages Barry County Update

 

UPDATE: Consumers Energy now reporting 317 customers out of electrical service.

 

Thunderstorms moving through the Barry County Area Sunday between 4:00 pm to 5:45 pm knocked out power to over fifteen hundred Consumers Energy customers.

The Hastings National Weather Service Climatological station recorded .16  in rainfall from the passing storms.

Revitalize Delton Community Project Community Input wanted

All Delton community members are welcome and encouraged to attend an update on the Revitalize Delton Community Project and help drive this project forward. Thursday, June 22nd at 6:30pm in the Delton Kellogg High School LGI.

The Revitalize Delton Project goal is to continue to gather community input and ideas.  Discussing three main topics: Community relationships, housing and infrastructure, and local economic developement

Pennock Hospital 100th Anniversary Celebration

Wednesday afternoon a public celebration will be held commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Spectrum Health Pennock, part of Corewell Health.  A Community Open House will be held from 3 to 6:30pm at the hospital on west Green Street.

 

A picnic cookout and MOOville ice cream will be served, there’ll be prizes and tours of the Baum Family Surgery Center, the Health and Wellness Center, and the Betty Ford Breast Care Services mammography bus.

Barry COW meeting

The Barry County Board of Commissioners held it's Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting Tuesday morning.  

 

The Committee interviewed Juli Sala and voted to recommend her to fill a partial term for the Planning Commission.  Craig Jenkins was interviewed and recommended for a partial term on the Zoning Board of Appeals, and Donald Johnson III was interviewed and recommended to fill a partial term on the Solid Waste Oversight committee as an industry representative. Also interviewed for a partial term on the Community Mental Health Authority Board was Lorraine Lindsey; there is one more candidate left to interview for that position. Those appointments will be finalized at next weeks Board of Commissioners meeting. 

 

The Committee of the Whole recommend renewal of the Blue Cross Blue Shield agreement for health care of inmates at the county jail who do not have their own insurance. The County is responsible for the costs associated with medical care of inmates while they are incarcerated and under the care, custody and control of the Barry County Sheriff.

 

Barry County Clerk Pam Palmer presented a request for two additional full time deputy clerks.  She said additional staff has become necessary due to expanded job duties in the Clerk’s Office.  After much discussion, the Committee of the Whole recommended one new full time employee for now, and will make a final decision on that after receiving the Audit Report for the current county budget at the June 27 Board of Commissioners meeting.

Lake Odessa Fair

Wednesday, June 21st is the official first day of summer -- it's also the opening day of the 88th Lake Odessa Fair.  Wednesday evening the Grand Parade through downtown Lake Odessa kicks off 5 days of fair activities.

Goodbye To The Hastings State Street Diner

The owner of the Hastings State Street Diner, Lee Campbell, informed WBCH News the Diners last day of business is June 27, 2023.  The doors will close at 3:00 pm.

 

The local restaurant has been in Hastings for many years bring in customers from nearby cities across  lower Michigan.

 

The property has been sold and being replaced by a car wash.

DNR Approves New Regulations for Deer Hunting

 The Michigan Deopartment of Natural Resources approved the latest deer-hunting regulations for the next three years.

The updated regulations are as follows.  Restriction on four-point antlers under the deer combo license was restored in 19 counties, including Barry, Calhoun, Ionia, Kent, Mecosta,  Montalm, Newaygo and Ottawa.

Hunters may now harvest multiple anterless deer in the Liberty Hunt, but the buck limit is still one.

Highway Lane Closures near Nashville

MDOT is reporting daily lane closures (7 am to 8 pm) for road work are scheduled for now through June 30 on M-79 (Lawrence Highway) from M-66 to Curtis Road. 

Daytime lane closures will also be in effect on M-66 from Assyria Road to Pearl Street in Nashville this Wednesday and Thursday. 

46 MSP Troopers Graduate

Michigan communities will soon benefit from the addition of 46 state troopers who
graduated Friday from the 143rd Trooper Recruit School. Gov. Whitmer was the keynote speaker during the ceremony in Lansing.

 

Col. Joe Gasper, director of the Michigan State Police (MSP), administered the Oath of Office to 46 individuals who begin their assignments at MSP posts across the state next week.  Among them is Sarah Roberts of Lake Odessa, who has been assigned to the Grand Rapids MSP post.

 

The next class, the 144th Trooper Recruit School, will begin on July 9, 2023, at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing.

 

With hundreds of trooper vacancies due to continued attrition, the MSP is actively recruiting for future trooper recruit schools. Persons interested in learning more should visit www.michigan.gov/MSPjobs for information on how to apply. 

 

Hastings Weather from January to June

It been an unusual year thus far when it come to weather in Hastings.

Like Grand Rapids the Hastings National Weather Service Climatological station recorded one of the wettest periods on record from January 1st through April. from the end of April to the first four days of June it has been one of the driest periods on record.

In May only 1.07 inches of rain for the entire month.

There could be some light rain come this Saturday, beyond that it's a big question mark.

 The Hot weather in the upper 80's and low 90's has produced very dry conditions. There is a state wide ban on burning.

Brad Heath Memorial Motorcycle Ride

Barry Commissioners COW meeting cancelled

The regularly scheduled Committee of the Whole meeting of the Barry County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, June 6, has been canceled due to a lack of agenda items.

 

The next meeting of the Board of Commissioners will be held on June 13, 2023 at 9:00 a.m.

Car vs Semi accident near Richland

Just before 11am Thursday members of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a personal injury accident on East D Ave in Richland Twp. When officers arrived on scene, it was determined that a passenger vehicle traveling eastbound on East D Ave rearended a semitruck and trailer that was stopped on the roadway making a delivery. The driver of the car was extricated from the vehicle by the Richland Fire Department and transported to a Kalamazoo area Hospital in serious condition.

 

No other individuals were hurt due to this accident. Speed and Alcohol are not believed to be factors in this accident. This incident is still under investigation by the Kalamazoo County Sheriffs Office.
